Industrial design is the design of products in a mass-production setting.  It studies both how the end-user will use the design as well as the aesthetics of the design.  The idea behind the industrial design to create a design that is both user-friendly and functional.  With this being said, it also has to have an easy way to be mass-produced.  This concept started in the early 1900s with the industrial revolution of Great Britain began.  Over time and decades this concept has taken on a much larger scale and now there are industrial designers in all kinds of various product development areas.

Sometimes we mix up engineering design and industrial design.  Engineers are here to produce the larger picture.  Typically they are not worried too much about the overall picture.  Things such as large ships, for example, will have all kinds of different components going into Them.  These components will have moving parts as well as the needs of a dining room design.  Each component on the ship will have the need for an Engineer as well as an industrial designer.  Engineering will focus on the functioning of the components. While Industrial design will focus more on the functioning of the components and the aesthetics of them.  In order to have the best product when you go to market it is important to hire an industrial design company.

Define Industrial Design

Industrial design has been defined as, “Industrial Design is a strategic problem-solving process that drives innovation, builds business success and leads to a better quality of life through innovative products, systems, services, and experiences.” in 2015 by the Korean Professional Practise Committee.  It is what solves the problems for whatever industry that is being studied.  Industrial design is the user interface if you will of what is to come. It should be easily enjoyed and function as it was meant to.

Industrial design is a design that is creating something that will improve life and solve a problem for a particular group of people.  It is how we have come so far in technology and industry as a whole.  It is what comes up with the product and the look and feel of the product.  Often times there are prototypes that will show what the product will look like and its function. These prototypes can go through a series of changes before the final product is agreed upon for production.  It will encompass a wide range of things for the way it can be mass-produced to how it looks, feels and functions to the end-user.

Examples of Industrial design

There are industrial designs from years past that has proven to a staple in our culture.  Things that just about anyone can relate to and completely know the brand in which that design was for.  This is certainly prevalent in things such as cars and trucks of the later years.  For example, everyone knows a Volkswagon Beetle when they see one, even without the branded logos on it.  This holds true for other automotive manufacturers as well as other products. Sometimes the logo or emblem is that of an industrial design that is unique to that brand of product.
